Lament for two pianos
This transcription of Dr. David DiChiera's (b.1935, d. 2018) Lament for two pianos was transcribed from a reel to reel tape recording of the piece's debut performance on Wednesday, April 10th, 1963 at Oakland University (OU), Oakland Center in Rochester, Michigan - performed by Dr. DiChiera and Dr. Robert Facko. Dr. DiChiera was an assistant professor at Oakland University in 1963, and helped to build the university's music program. During his ten years at OU, DiChiera became chairman of the music department and helped establish the Meadow Brook Theatre and Meadow Brook Music Festival. He left OU in 1971 after establishing Michigan Opera Theatre, now Detroit Opera.
As no score for the piece has to date been found, Lisa and Cristina DiChiera requested OU Music Technology and Computer Science student, Joshua Rao, to transcribe the reel-to-reel recording.
Lisa and Cristina DiChiera wish to thank Joshua Rao for his work on this project. They also thank Rebecca Happel, OU Instructor of Applied Piano and Benjamin R. Fuhrman, former OU Special Lecturer in Music Technology and Composition, for advising on the project and recommending their student Joshua Rao; and Dominique Daniel, retired OU Professor and Coordinator of Archives and Special Collections, Kresge Library, who located the reel to reel recording in the university's archives and assisted with its digitization. It is believed the recording had not been heard since 1963. Prof. Daniel also is responsible for having organized the David DiChiera archives at OU's Kresge Library.
